Asthma Drugs - The Frontline Defense Against AsthmaJ.D. DeanAsthma affects a staggering 300 million people worldwide. It's effect can be measured by the impact it has, not only on families but on health systems worldwide. In many cases, sufferers will undergo some type of asthma drug program depending on their level of affliction.
Asthma drug products will normally fall into two areas; those used for quick relief or for long term control. The core base of asthma treatments will concentrate on relaxing bronchospasm or by reducing inflammation. Understanding Asthma Patterns It's important to understand what asthma is and that it can vary in it's patterns. Firstly, asthma is best described as a chronic inflammatory disorder of the airways. On going episodes follow if good management practices are not put into place with symptoms such as wheezing, breathlessness, tightness in the chest and coughing the most recognizable. Sufferers report asthma patterns such as those classed as seasonal or perennial, with the duration of attacks plus their severity and frequency determinig their level of asthma. Seasonal attacks may relate to triggers such as allergens including pollens. What triggers asthma is a whole new area but apart from those already mentioned, exercise, medications and a person's work environment could very well be a possible trigger mechanism depending what allergens are present. Asthma Drugs Asthma drugs perform their work in two main areas; either quick relief or long term. In the case of long term drugs, an action plan will normally be worked out with your doctor while in the case of quick relief, asthma drugs designed to cope with acute attacks are used. Adrenaline was one of the drugs initially used for treating asthma however, it can lead to side effects such as nausea, vommitting and rapid heart rate. Preferred treatment is usually inhaled medication.Inhaled medications act directly in the airway surface and muscle where the problems initiate. In certain cases, oral medication is used either in tablet or liquid form while treatment known as allergy shots can also be administered in many instances and these are common for younger people who may be prone to reacting to triggers such as dust mites. On going research on asthma continues and treatments are evolving in some shape or other all the time. With the massive number of people affected by it each year, you could imagine the resources that go into this research. Asthma drugs play an important part in the management programs put in place to combat asthma. At the moment, there is no cure and while taking medications may not be a great option for some, they are one of the best defenses we have in the struggle against this serious illness. |
